safety

The better choice depends on route certainty, refill quality, weather, and how much risk you create if the planned water source is worse than expected.

The right reason to cancel is not weakness but the point where wind, storms, visibility, or heat remove the margin that made the original plan reasonable.

Wind matters because it changes balance, body temperature, comfort on breaks, and how exposed terrain feels even when rain is not the main issue.

A late return gets safer when you admit it early, cut the plan, prepare light and layers, and stop pretending the original schedule still applies.

Winter footing problems often appear on easy terrain first, so traction planning should start with surface reality rather than assuming the route stays simple in cold conditions.
